Spain, 1559. The painter Sofonisba is summoned to court as lady-in-waiting and teacher to the youthful queen - her father's insistent advice still resonates in her ears: "Never forget to sign a painting."

Germany, 2000: Sofie Lenze is in custody. The young art restorer is accused of forging paintings by the most successful artist of the Renaissance, Sofonisba Anguissola. During the long interrogations, Sofie confronts the investigating inspector with her own truth: she has the gift of painting like the great master - and even experts cannot distinguish her signature from the original because she shares Sofonisba's memories. But is it really possible that the painter lives on in Sofie?
